Πάρε λίγο από τα χαρισματικά φωνητικά των Wild Beasts και του Antony, λίγο από τον θεατρικό χαρακτήρα των Efterklang πρόσθεσε και δύο πρέζες από Baroque και έχεις ένα ντεμπούτο που αν όλα πάνε όπως τα περιμένω θα ξεχωρίσει την χρονιά που μας έρχεται. The High Road

Broken Bells is an American indie rock band featuring artist/producer Danger Mouse (billed by his real name, Brian Burton) and singer James Mercer. The project was first announced on Tuesday, September 29, 2009. On December 14th the band released their first email update, in which a binary coded message stating; 'The High Road is hard to find' was displayed, offering a link to the bands web page, now with a new color scheme, for 'further details.' On the morning of December 21, the band informed fans in an e-mail message of the release of their debut single "The High Road", which was made available as a free download on their official site. The self-titled debut album is out in the U.S. on March 9th.

An accompaniment to the animated film 'Varmints', this is a collection of achingly beautiful orchestral work balanced on a bed of Jóhannsson's patented electronics. Surprisingly however, the film itself is not intrinsic to the enjoyment of the music; Jóhannsson's score stands alone perfectly as a haunting collection of tracks.

As with most soundtracks, the album is made up of a selection of repeating themes which appear and disappear throughout the record; Jóhannsson manages to approach this with such subtlety you can't always even tell that a familiar theme is drifting in and out of each track. The clouds of ambience and growls of synthesizer that underpin the lilt of the orchestra are crucial to the record and give a similar warmth similar to what made 'Englaborn' so very special. These pieces are memorable and deeply moving, and within one listen you could almost visualise the film itself – or at least a home made version. Soundtrack or not, Jóhannsson has created yet another peerless collection of electronic/classical vignettes you won't be forgetting any time soon.

Το 2010 ξεκινάει για την Inner Ear με την κυκλοφορία του πρώτου άλμπουμ των Electric Litany, “How to Be a Child & Win the War”. Οι Electric Litany έρχονται από την Αγγλία, και αποτελούνται από τον Αλέξανδρο Μίαρη (φωνητικά, κιθάρες, πιάνο, synths), τον Duane Petrovitch (μπάσο) and Richard Simic (drums). Μέσα σε μικρό διάστημα χρόνου έχουν καταφέρει να μαγέψουν το κοινό με τις «στοιχειωμένες» μελωδίες, την ασυγκράτητη δυναμική και τους ρομποτικούς ρυθμούς τους. Το “How to Be a Child & Win the War” ηχογραφήθηκε τον Ιούλιο του 2009 σε μια εγκαταλελειμένη εκκλησία στο Βόρειο Λονδίνο και θα κυκλοφορήσει από την Inner Ear τον ερχόμενο Ιανουάριο.

Οι λίστες τελείωσαν (περίπου) και εμένα μου έμειναν 126 gb μουσικής που δεν κατάφερα να ακούσω ούτε μια φορά. Τραγικό θα μου πεις, το ξέρω. Αλλά να, αυτό το ξεσκαρτάρισμα πολύ μου αρέσει, αυτός ο χαμός mp3 και η μετωπική με δουλειές όπως και δαύτη. Το ''A Theme For The Moon'', την πρώτη σόλο δουλειά του πιανίστα Luigi Rubino. Άφωνος. Δεν είναι το μελαγχολικό ύφος, δεν είναι ο καιρός, είναι η ικανότητα αυτής της μουσικής να σου ρίχνει γροθιά στο στομάχι.

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : τα when you finish me, wasteland, witching stone, rats, heaven and hell, drugs, all my steps, forget my heart, liar's ink, suicide, back to the underground, last chance, iri sulu. Και τα δεκατρία δΓιαμάντια δηλαδή τα οποία αποτελούν το έκτο πόνημα μιας εκ των δύο μεγαλύτερων συγκροτημάτων επί γης (για τα δικά μου δύο λέω, χαλαρώστε). Δεκατρία διαμάντια τα οποία περιγράφουν ιστορίες για αγάπη, πόνο, χωρισμό, θλίψη, θάνατο με τον μοναδικό τρόπο που οι TBHP ξέρουν. 2. The Antlers - Hospice (Frenchkiss)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : ένα δίσκο που τον πίστεψα από την αρχή, τον στήριξα από την αρχή και με αποζημίωσε μέχρι το τέλος. Όπως συνέβη και το 2008 με τους Get Well Soon, ήταν ένας δίσκος που βρήκα τυχαία, που κανείς δεν αναφερόταν σ' αυτόν για πολλούς μήνες μέσα στον χρόνο, και εκεί στον αύγουστο ήρθε το 8.5 του pitchfork και όλα πήγαν δεξιά για το νέο αγαπημένο μου συγκρότημα. Όλοι το αγάπησαν. Το μόνο που έχω να ευχηθώ είναι καλή συνέχεια και καλή τύχη, θα σας περιμένω!

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : το βράδυ που διάβασα αυτό το κείμενο από τον Arturo Bandini. Το βράδυ εκείνο και τους μήνες που ακολούθησαν ακούγοντας τις εύθραυστες μελωδίες και την υπνωτική φωνή της μικρούλας Anja Plaschg. Από τους πλέον αγαπημένους ''πένθιμους'' δίσκους που έχω ακούσει μέχρι σήμερα.

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : την καλύτερη συναυλία της χρονιάς. Τον ογκόλιθο APTBS να παρουσιάζει τραγούδια από το ονειρικό Exploding Head και το ντεμπούτο τους, και εγώ εκεί, στην πρώτη σειρά, να σκάω χαμόγελα. Το συγκρότημα που κατάφερε να κάνει τον θόρυβο να ακούγεται εύηχα και γλυκά.

6. Piano Magic - Ovations (Darla Records)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : το δέκα το καλό. Την δέκατη και πιο ενδιαφέρουσα κυκλοφορία των πολυαγαπημένων Piano Magic. Για την εξέχουσα καλλιτεχνική οντότητα που ακούει στο όνομα Glen Johnson τα είπα παρακάτω, μιας και ο προσωπικός του δίσκος μπήκε και αυτός στα 50 δισκάκια που κόλλησαν σε players. Είναι ολόκληρο μουσικό κεφάλαιο οι PM, αν έχετε όρεξη ανοίξτε το, θα σαλέψετε!!!

7. Rykarda Parasol - For Blood And Wine (Self Release)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : την συγκλονιστικότερη γυναικεία φωνή που άκουσα την τελευταία δεκαετία. Την φωνή που βάζει μαζί Pj και Hope Sandoval κάτω. Την φωνή που τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες ακούω τουλάχιστον μια φορά πριν κλείσω τα μάτια μου το βράδυ. Την φωνή για την οποία ο Saunterer έγραφε τα καλύτερα αλλά δεν τον πίστεψα, την πρώτη φορά τουλάχιστον, την δεύτερη φορά μπήκα στον πειρασμό, και κόλλησα. Thanks a lot!!!

8. Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport (ATP)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : την παγίωση των FB ως ενός από τα κορυφαία experimental συγκροτήματα. Την έξυπνη και πετυχημένη κίνηση τους να βάλουν το noise σε δεύτερο λόγο και να περάσουν σε πιο ηλεκτρονικά-post rock μονοπάτια. Κάποιοι μιλούν για περισσότερο προσβάσιμο ήχο, εγώ μιλάω για επτά εξαιρετικές συνθέσεις.

9. Mount Eerie - Wind's Poem (P.W. Elverum & Sun)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : την θεϊκά πειραματική επιστροφή του P.W. Elverum. Αυτού του γνήσιου, underground, τραγουδοποιού. Του καλλιτέχνη που κινείται από την indie folk και το lo-fi στην αντίπερα όχθη του σκληρού experimental έως και metal ήχου με τόση χάρη και ευκολία που θαρρείς και ζουν δύο (ίσως και τρεις) μουσικές ιδιοφυΐες μέσα σε ένα μυαλό.

10. Archive - Controlling Crowds [The Complete Edition Parts I-IV] (Warner Music France)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : την πρώτη φορά που είδα επιτέλους συναυλία των Archive. Ευτυχώς τους είδα φέτος, στην καλύτερη φάση της καριέρας τους, και στην παρουσίαση του πιο ενδιαφέροντος δίσκου που έχουν κυκλοφορήσει μέχρι σήμερα. 24 τραγούδια γεμάτα έμπνευση, φρεσκάδα και ποιότητα.

Την περίμενα καιρό αυτή την συναυλία. Δεν ξέρω αν το κατάλαβαν πολλοί αλλά αυτό ήταν ένα από τα live της χρονιάς (και όχι μόνο). Όσοι δεν ήρθαν θα χτυπάνε τα κεφάλια τους αργότερα. Ήταν αυτό ακριβώς που περίμενα, τίποτα λιγότερο, τίποτα περισσότερο. Ένα εξηντάλεπτο καυλωτικής φασαρίας. Όχι, όχι, μην με παρεξηγείται, δεν ήταν απλή, αδικαιολόγητη, ανούσια φασαρία. Ήταν μια μεγαλειώδη, πανέξυπνη, ευρηματική, ισοπεδωτική φασαρία. Και όταν αυτός ο οδοστρωτήρας ξεκινάει τις μηχανές του με το αγαπημένο σου τραγούδι (Βλέπε Ego Death), ε σόρρυ κιόλας αλλά κάθεσαι σιωπηλός και περιμένεις την στιγμή που θα σε καταπατήσει. Δεν ήταν ο Ackermann, ούτε ο Jono MOFO, ούτε ο Jay Space που έκανε την διαφορά, ήταν και οι τρεις μαζί, από το ξεκίνημα η σύνδεση μεταξύ τους ήταν κάτι το εντυπωσιακό. Ένας για όλους και όλοι για έναν. Για το τζαμάρισμα τα τελευταία δέκα-δεκαπέντε λεπτά τι να πεις πάλι, ότι και να πεις θα είναι λίγο.

Υ.Γ1 Η αναλογία ανδρών-γυναικών ήταν 50%-50%, μπορεί τώρα που το σκέφτομαι οι γυναίκες να ήταν και περισσότερες, respect στο ''ασθενές φύλο''.

Υ.Γ2 Ναι ο zeugolator φορούσε ωτοασπίδες σχεδόν σε ολόκληρο το live, μόνο στο τελειωτικό τζαμάρισμα τόλμησε να τις βγάλει. Καλά έκανε γιατί μετά το live των Fuck Button άκουσε στο 100% μετά από 5 μέρες.

Υ.Γ3 Την συναυλία αυτή μόλις τελείωσε ο zeugolator την χαρακτήρισε γρήγορα γρήγορα ως την καλύτερη της ζωής του, δεν κράτησε για πολύ όμως, τον πλησίασε αυτός ο κερατάς και του είπε κατά λέξη ''ίσως από τα καλύτερα live που έχουν γίνει στην χώρα μας, αλλά σε κλίμακα my bloody valentine αυτό ήταν ένα 0,3 στα 100''.

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : τον ουρανοκατέβατο δίσκο των Sholi. Την γνήσια alternative δουλειά τους που δυστυχώς δεν ακούστηκε ιδιαίτερα εκεί έξω. Τι να πρωτοθυμηθώ, Any Other God, All That We Can See, Dance For Hours, Contortionist, όλα τους είναι θεσπέσια!

12. Editors - In This Light And On This Evening (Kitchenware Records)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : την μεγαλύτερη έκπληξη της χρονιάς. Την εμπιστοσύνη που έδειξαν οι Editors στα synthια τους και την μετέπειτα δικαίωση τους. Δίσκος χωρίς ίχνος ελαττώματος, καλοδουλεμένος, πιασάρικος αλλά ταυτόχρονα δαιμονισμένα σκοτεινός. Και για εκείνο το bonus disc τι να πεις, ισοπεδωτικό!

13. Crippled Black Phoenix - 200 Tons Of Bad Luck (INVADA)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : την δεύτερη καλύτερη (πρώτη είναι οι Woven Hand) συναυλία που είδα φέτος στην θεσσαλονίκη. Μπορεί στο 200 Tons Of Bad Luck να μην φαίνεται τόσο εύκολα αλλά αν ακούσεις τα Night Raiders/The Resurrectionists θα καταλάβεις ότι το υπερσυγκρότημα των CBP συνέλαβε και υλοποίησε με επιτυχία μια μοναδική ιδέα. Δύο ώρες περίτεχνης εγκεφαλικής μουσικής δεν είναι δα και μικρό πράγμα. Respect!

14. French Teen Idol - El Siete Es La Luz (Self Release)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : τον πρώτο δίσκο εδώ και τέσσερα χρόνια που με έκανε να ξεπεράσω το αριστούργημα του Sketchie, Rain By High Lantern. O Andrea Di Carlo κάνει ένα χαρμάνι την electronica και το post rock, χώνει και διάσπαρτα υπέροχα φωνητικά και σου πασάρει ένα ονειρικό πακετάκι. Καλά να είσαι γείτονα, πάντα τέτοια!

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : τον σπουδαιότερο ποπ δίσκο που άκουσα τα τελευταία χρόνια. Δεν ήταν πολλές οι στιγμές που ήθελα να ακούσω μουσική με μια αισιόδοξη-χαρούμενη νότα αλλά όταν το ήθελα αναζητούσα την συντροφιά των Camera Obscura. Δίσκος που σου φτιάχνει την διάθεση στο πι και φι και σε γεμίζει με χιλιάδες θετικές σκέψεις.

16. Doves - Kindgom Of Rust (Heavenly Records)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : τον πρώτο δίσκο των Doves που αξιώθηκα και άκουσα. Στοίχειωσε σε ipod και pc για πολύ πολύ καιρό. Ρυθμός, εντάσεις, εναλλαγές, μελωδίες, ενδιαφέροντες στίχοι, κολλητικά ρεφρέν. Αν ήταν έτσι και οι παλιότερες δουλειές τους λυπάμαι πολύ που δεν τις παρακολούθησα.

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : την εξωτική παρουσία της Karin Dreijer Andersson. Η Karin απέδειξε ότι δεν χρειάζεται την βοήθεια του αδερφού της για να μεγαλουργήσει. Δεν λέω και οι The Knife μας έχουν δώσει δισκάρες αλλά αυτό το ντεμπούτο είναι σοκαριστικά εντυπωσιακό, από όλες τις απόψεις. Πολύ θα ήθελα να την δω και ζωντανά.

18. Bat For Lashes - Two Suns (Astralwerks)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : το νατασάκι να τραγουδάει το daniel και ο zeugolator να κρέμεται από τα χίλια της λες και προσφωνεί το όνομα του. Το νατασάκι με τα γκρι φούτερ και την κόκκινη ζακετούλα να κινείται ανήσυχα ανάμεσα σε κάτι σκοτεινές οντότητες και ο zeugolator να συνεχίζει να πιστεύει ότι φωνάζει αυτόν να έρθει για να την λυτρώσει. Θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι το νατασάκι ΓΕΝΙΚΑ!

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra (SMZ) returns with its sixth full-length recording and first since the band’s line-up change of summer 2008. Having shed three members and recruited one (drummer David Payant) the group officially dropped the "Tra-La-La Band’ from its name, played a debut performance as a newly minted quintet at All Tomorrow’s Parties in upstate NY, and embarked on an extensive European tour through the fall of 2008. Anchored by the fried electric guitar and plangent voice of band leader Efrim Menuck (who previously co-founded Godspeed You! Black Emperor ) SMZ continues to slide comfortably and unforcedly towards an expansive, loose and blues-inflected balladry – not so much the inexorably riffing blues shuffle of the title track from its previous effort, 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons, but a more languid waltz-time marking an almost smouldering dynamic arc, as heard on the new album’s opening track “There Is A Light” and gorgeous closer “’Piphany Rambler”.

Needless to say, the slow burn with SMZ, whatever the blues influence these days, bears little reference to typical notions of musical seduction, relaxation, or hip-swinging satisfaction. What smoulders here is much more precarious and anxious, driven by some of this decade’s more devastating lyrical conjurings – of the universal outsider and the thematics of 21st century western psychic oppression. As the lyrics to “There Is A Light” attest, these are no simple paens to the human spirit, but songs of complex, desperate and thorny hope. The words to this song (and so many others too often poorly understood in the SMZ cannon) should at least give the lie to the oft-repeated charge that Menuck is some sort of miserablist or glib pessimist. This time around, they are also legibly printed for all to see and read in the accompanying insert.

With Efrim now the lone guitarist, his shattered oscillating tone and staggered snarling leads collide against one another on tape, framed by a swirling widescreen backdrop of dual violins, courtesy Sophie Trudeau and Jessica Moss. Their playing is in ways more classically orchestral than ever in many places on Kollaps Tradixionales, serving up arpeggiated runs and modernist strokes that counterbalance and destabilize the more conventional progressions at the core of any given song or movement. Thierry Amar’s upright bass work as always plays a similar role, fluidly moving from harmonic anchor to counterpoint to adventurous extrapolation, displaying this player’s fluency and alliance with free jazz, improv and out music. The way all these strings push and pull, with their own multiplicity of influences, against those punk rock ‘lektrik guitars has long been one of SMZ’s crucial and inimitable strengths. It is on fine display in many exciting new guises on the new album, and the band’s freshest member, dummer David Payant, does a wonderful job playing into and off of this heady brew.

And of course there is plenty going on here that ain’t no blues at all, particularly the two middle sides of this four-sided album. “Metal Bird”, as it has been known to fans from set lists over the past couple of years, takes up Side Two (or tracks 2 +3 on the CD) and the two sections now bear titles that together spell out the entire first enigmatic line of the song. This has been a massive crowd favourite in concert in recent years, careening through a throbbing 7/4 template of intertwined ascending and descending lines, coalescing into unison melodies and pumping breakdowns. The sonic references are abundant, ranging from afrobeat to bouzouki music to hard bop to punk rock – culminating in the memorable refrain “dance you motherfuckers”. The three phases of the album’s ‘title track’ on Side Three (with their variant spellings and parenthetical modifiers) are indeed ‘traditionals’ of a sort, playing on tropes of American and Anglo-Saxon folk, marching song, sea shanty and hymnal. Together they make for perhaps the most overtly enchanting (“Kollapz”), tender (“Collapse”) and terrifyingly rapturous (“Kollaps”) music on the record.

Kollaps Tradixionales is available on CD in a custom gatefold paperboard jacket with lyric sheet insert, and on double 180g 10" vinyl in a deluxe package that includes a CD copy of the album, a special 16-page 7″×9″ perfect bound art book of found image collages by Efrim Menuck and filmmaker/photographer Jem Cohen with a foil-embossed cover, and a limited edition silkscreen poster. All papers and boards used in the packaging for both formats are 100% recycled. The album is also available digitally.

Glen Johnson - Institutionalized EP - 2009

the tracks on 'institutionalized' come from the same home recordings sessions that formed my recent debut solo album, 'details not recorded'. even so, listening to them now within the context of an ep, they sound to me like a subtle progression, a signpost to the way forward. around the time of recording, i spent a couple of days loitering around whitechapel hospital here in london, where joseph carey merrick ('the elephant man') was institutionalized in the 1890's. my obsession with merrick is well-documented but unashamed. his is a story of human wretchedness and human compassion. i'm fascinated by both in equal measure, though my attraction to wandering hospital corridors when i'm not the slightest bit ill might be viewed as worrying to some. i've thrown in a cover of sonic youth's 'secret girl', not only because i've always loved the 'EVOL' album but because the words remind me of merrick and anyone else who ever looked (or felt) different. there's inexcusably something of david lynch's 'the elephant man' movie in my sonic palette here; the hospital's coal-fed victorian boiler room. elsewhere, revenge, anger, loss, loneliness, violence, death, woe. business as usual ------------------------------> myspace.com/glenashleyjohnson

Αγαπητό μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : τον καλύτερο ίσως δίσκο που έχουν δώσει ποτέ ηθοποιοί. Στην συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση οι Ryan Gosling και Zach Shields. Gospel άλλης εποχής, με τους δύο ηθοποιούς να δίνουν ρέστα στα φωνητικά και την παιδική χορωδία (την οποία ακούς να σιγοτραγουδάει για νεκρούς, πτώματα, και άλλα ανάλογα) να δίνει ένα spooky τόνο στα τραγούδια.

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : τον πιο όμορφο κινηματογραφικό (και όχι μόνο) δίσκο της χρονιάς. Ο συνδυασμός electronica και ambient που παρουσιάζουν με περίτεχνο τρόπο οι Max Lewis και Mirza Ramic στο Matador είναι επιβλητικός, γοητευτικός, μαγευτικός. Μια ενδοφλέβια με ολίγη από Matador σου εξασφαλίζει ένα ατελείωτο ταξίδι στην λήθη.

23. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (Slumberland)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : την απίστευτη εκείνη βραδιά στο Gagarin, όπου ένα από τα πιο hot ονόματα της παγκόσμιας μουσικής σκηνής μας επισκεπτόταν ακριβώς στην ώρα του. Αρκετά αμήχανοι αρχικά, με τις αθώες παιδικές τους φάτσες να μας κοιτάνε και να αναρωτιούνται πως στο καλό τους μάθαμε τόσο γρήγορα στην μακρινή ελλάδα. Παρουσίασαν ολόκληρο το πρώτο τους αλμπουμ και το Gagarin γέμισε με χαρούμενες shoegaze-ικο-pop μελωδίες.

24. Toma - As We Fall Into Static Our Hearts Sing (Wise Owl Records)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : την παλικαρίσια σόλο δουλειά του βρετανού Toma. Post rock με ολίγη από shoegaze και πολύ από iLiKETRAiNS. Μια εκπληκτική φωνή ντυμένη με τις πιο όμορφες νευρικές κιθάρες, με τα πιο ταξιδιάρικα μελαγχολικά μουσικά χαλιά και τα πιο απόκοσμα τύμπανα.

25. The XX - XX (Young Turks)

Αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο από το 2009 θα ήθελα να θυμάμαι : το δεύτερο από τα δύο πιο δικαιολογημένα hype της χρονιάς. Crystalised, Islands, Teardrops (για κάποιο ανεξήγητο λόγο δεν μπήκε στο κανονικό άλμπουμ) είναι σπουδαία τραγούδια. Dream pop στα καλύτερα της. Ελπίζω η δημοσιότητα να μην τους χτυπήσει στο κεφάλι και το διαλύσουν. Η Baria Qureshi, τα πλήκτρα τους δηλαδή, πριν λίγες μέρες την έκανε από το συγκρότημα και συνεχίσουν τρίο πλέον.
