Sigur Rós On Indefinite Hiatus

On 28 May 2009 Sigur Rós announced that they had almost completed recording their latest album.The band said the album is taking form as a slower and more ambient record than both Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust and Takk.... The music is also described as melodic but much less noisy and more "out there" than previous albums. The as yet untitled album is expected to be released sometime in 2010. In fact this turned out to be just rumours ;Jonsi commented on them. "We haven't got another album ready," he said. "It was just a rumour. We started to record something, but then we chucked it all away. So I think we are going to have to start it all again."

Jonsi's revelation about the "new album" was all but confirmed to be true as the band announced their indefinite hiatus in January 2010.

Two songs for your ears
I'd like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season. A sincere thank you to the people who have been following this page.
These last couple days I've been alone in the house with ice on my knee, making some music for fun. Messing around with computer loops and words and voices. I'm often filled with a desire to surprise myself and make something different. Good different, bad different, doesn't really matter... Anyhow, that's what I tried to do, and these two songs are what I came up with.
The two new songs are called 'inside out there' & 'these walls of mine'

These are recordings that will most likely never be released (or rather, THIS is how they are being released), which I have posted here for free download, pairing them which an image and some text.

Matt Elliott - Songs (Sing The Sorrow, Today Is The Last Day)

Ο Matt Elliott είναι τεράστιος καλλιτέχνης, ένας τεράστιος υποτιμημένος (σχετικά) καλλιτέχνης. Ένας μουσικός χαμαιλέοντας. Που όταν θέλει γίνεται ένας άρχοντας της ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής (Third Eye Foundation) και όταν βαρεθεί τα laptop μεταμορφώνεται σε ένα μελαγχολικό singer-songwriter, έτσι απλά. Πριν λίγες μέρες κυκλοφόρησε το Songs, μια κασετίνα με 4 cd ή 7 βινύλια που περιέχει της σειρά Songs (βλέπε Drinking Songs, Failing Songs, Howling Songs και το φετινό Failed Songs). Φυσικά είναι μια κασετίνα υψηλής αισθητικής και την συνιστώ σε όλους, ακόμη και σε αυτούς που έχουν τους δίσκους του σε cd (όπως εγώ). Το Failed Songs περιέχει τραγούδια από όλη την περίοδο που ηχογραφήθηκαν τα τρία songs και έμειναν εκτός δίσκων, χωρίς να καταλαβαίνει κανείς το γιατί, μιας και τα επτά τους είναι υπέροχα. Δεν ξεφεύγουν από τις νόρμες των τριών δίσκων, κλασικές (κόβω φλέβες) φολκ μελωδίες, με την υπέροχη μελαγχολική φωνή του Matt να αποτελεί οδηγό των συνθέσεων (όπου υπάρχουν φωνητικά). Λιγότερα ξεσπάσματα από το Howling Songs, χωρίς αυτό βέβαια να σημαίνει ότι λείπει το έντονο συναίσθημα και ο ειλικρινής χαρακτήρας που βγάζει ο Matt όταν τραγουδάει και παίζει μουσική. Μοναδικός!!!

More than half a decade has elapsed since the release of Faking The Books, Lali Puna's third (and hitherto most recent) long-player, but the band's impact on the climate of electronic rock music remains palpable. Along with sister-group The Notwist, this Weilheim quartet have helped map out the musical landscape for modern, experimentally minded pop music, and Our Inventions finds Lali Puna continuing to push the frontiers of their medium. 'Rest Your Head' serves as a perfectly poised re-introduction to the band and all they've become. Initiated by waves of glassy pulsations and warm, swelling synths, the song has the feel of a reverse-lullaby - gently winding its way through reposeful melodies, guided by the welcoming whisper of Trebeljahr's vocal until the final third kicks in with drum machine hits, and you're wide awake. While Faking The Books, with its vibrant riffs and extrovert tendencies, had the sound of a record begging to be played live, Our Inventions exhibits the hallmarks of an album spun from intensive studio-bound introspection. Two of the most explosive and ebullient songs here - 'Remember' and 'Everything Is Always' - confirm so much of what's special about Lali Puna: all the elements are at once precision engineered and delivered with absolute heartfelt conviction; perhaps never before have such jubilant pop hooks been so meticulously and fastidiously crafted, yet you can always hear the soul behind these machines. This is an album that's made for and about the modern world, concerning itself with the driving forces of progress and technological obsession. Trebeljahr's lyrics are suggestive of alienation and disenfranchisement from nature during the irony-laced title-track: "The birds in the trees/Singing our mobile melodies/What a sweet, sweet world", later stipulating that 'progress' never really gets us anywhere on 'Everything Is Always' ("Nothing new/These days"), while hinting at the ultimate bankruptcy of the all-devouring consumer age during 'Safe Tomorrow': "Never going anywhere/Don't stop by and get to know/Stuff your memory with facts/Save Save Save". The final song on the tracklist is 'Out There', a collaboration with the Yellow Magic Orchestra's Yukihiro Takahashi. The version appearing here is an alternate rendering of the track that appeared on Takahashi's Page By Page album in 2009. Here Trebeljahr addresses the global financial collapse ("Their kingdom's past, their kingdom's gone/Just ruins and plain desert/It's all burnt down, we're left alone"), and sure enough, Our Inventions is a body of work that keenly engages with the concerns of its time, one that confronts the excesses and ever-accelerating pace of modernity. The sublime, virtuoso electronic arrangements of Our Inventions directly lock onto the record's recurrent key themes, depicting a world inundated with technology and consumed by a fixation on progress - simultaneously passing commentary on this state of affairs and overcoming it. When Trebeljahr intones "Things move on/I'm gonna work fast because tomorrow comes quick" it sounds like it's being sung from the perspective of someone who's already there.

Neutral Milk Hotel - Bright Eyes - Beirut. Κανονικά μόνο αυτά τα τρία ονόματα θα έφταναν και δεν θα χρειαζόταν τίποτα παραπάνω. Αλλά για τους δύσκολους ας πούμε κάτι ακόμη. Οι Icarus Himself είναι το project του τραγουδιστή των National Beekeepers Society (ποιοι είναι αυτό τώρα θα μου πεις και δεν θα έχεις και άδικο, πάτημα στο link για λεπτομέρειες). Το Coffins διαρκεί μόλις 27 λεπτά, αποτελείται από γρήγορες συνθέσεις  που δεν ξεπερνούν τα δύο άντε τρία λεπτά, ακουστική κιθάρα κυρίως και μερικά άλλα χαριτωμένα όργανα, φωνή τελείως Conor Oberst και στίχοι μαγεία.

Όχι δεν ήρθε ακόμη στα χέρια μου η deluxe edition  (ελπίζω όμως την άλλη εβδομάδα να έρθει) αλλά κάποιοι τυχεροί την απέκτησαν, μιας και εχθές είχαμε την επίσημη κυκλοφορία. Έτσι λοιπόν αδράξαμε την ευκαιρία να ακούσουμε ολοκληρωμένη την νέα δουλειά του κύριου Konstantin Gropper. Με αυτό το δεύτερο δισκάκι λοιπόν οι Get Well Soon παγιώνονται στις κορυφαίες θέσεις με τα αγαπημένα άλμπουμ της χρονιάς που ξεκίνησε πριν λίγες μέρες. Γιατί οι GWS δείχνουν να τα καταφέρνουν το ίδιο καλά και στις διασκευές.

Δεύτερος δίσκος για την κολεκτίβα από την Καλιφόρνια. Το συγκρότημα πέρασε από τα χίλια κύματα για να φτάσει στην ολοκλήρωση του ''an index of birds''. Μετά την κυκλοφορία του The Glass Bottom Boat, του πρώτου τους δίσκου, οι Carta ουσιαστικά διαλύθηκαν. Σταθερά έμειναν μόνο τα δύο ιδρυτικά μέλη, βλέπε Kyle Monday και Ray Welter. Αφού ξεκίνησαν από την αρχή και βρήκαν νέους μουσικούς η σκέψη ήταν να δημιουργήσουν δύο δίσκους, ένα σαν συγκρότημα και ένα περισσότερο πειραματικό. Τελικά οι πρόβες τους οδήγησαν σε αυτό που ονόμασαν ''an index of birds''. Ένα indie δίσκο με αρκετά experimental στοιχεία. Με instrumental συνθέσεις αλλά και με την συμμετοχή της Lorealle Bishop στα φωνητικά πολλών τραγουδιών. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι άκρως μαγικό, σχεδόν υπνωτικό. Με πολλά slowcore σημεία αλλά χωρίς να απουσιάζουν και τα απαραίτητα ξεσπάσματα.

Silber Records : Carta reminds us of a ton of stuff we like from Low to Six by Seven to Plumerai to Charles Atlas & are in the tradition of all the mid 1990s moody pop/slowcore/indie rock/post rock bands we came of age to.

AllMusicGuide: "Like many fine bands before it -- Joy Division, Low, Mogwai among others -- Carta seeks to use rock band instrumentation to emphasize reflective mood rather than simply traditional performance. Unlike many other predominantly instrumental rock acts of recent years, though, Carta are blessedly free of the go-nowhere dullardry that ended up giving post-rock a bad name -- the group's songs are all miniature portraits that benefit from careful variation within a generally propulsive structure."

Official video for The Raveonettes' song "Boys Who Rape." This is the second video from their latest release In and Out of Control. Created by Sune Rose Wagner.

Sune comments on the making of the video:
''I penned this song in the later stages of recording In And Out Of Control. At the time I wanted to add an up-tempo song to the album but had no idea what I was getting myself into. The words started pouring and suddenly I realized I was writing about something very important and close to me. An anger stored in me for as long as I can remember. An anger triggered in me by personally witnessing the effect of rape on various individuals and the cowardice of the perpetrators. The immense hatred for someone savagely robbing another girls innocence. The disgust for someone brutally forcing a girl to succumb to horrendous acts of violence and sexual humiliation, scarring her for life.

The video was done in the same fashion as the songwriting. Quick and spontaneous. Anger and frustration was cast upon the images and thrown together in a disorderly fashion mimicking the violent behavior of rapists. The song is also a celebration of life and the fact that life does move on even after tragic events such as these. I chose to incorporate several "happy" moments, such as the best guitar solo ever, into the video to leave a sense of hope amidst all this tremendous despair.

Be warned, some images are quite strong but I felt it necessary to portray the evilness in this barbaric act''.

thoughts that move

28 μέρες ή αλλιώς 672 ώρες χρειάστηκαν στον Αυστραλό Hunz για να συλλάβει, να γράψει και να παρουσιάσει τον δεύτερο δίσκο του Thoughts That Move. Φυσικά όλο αυτό δεν το έκανε έτσι επειδή του ήρθε στο κεφάλι αλλά γιατί πήρε μέρος στο διαγωνισμό RPM Challenge, όπου συμμετείχαν 2200 καλλιτέχνες και είχαν 28 μέρες για να γράψουν νέα μουσική και να την παρουσιάσουν. Ο Hunz κινείται ανάμεσα στην electronica και στην experimental pop. Εμένα μου θύμισε αρκετά Trouble Over Tokyo, τόσο στα φωνητικά όσο και στο ύφος. Όσοι πιστοί.....

Hundred Year Storm

Τελικά οι 65daysofstatic δεν επηρέασαν μόνο συγκροτήματα στην Ευρώπη αλλά και στην αντίπερα όχθη. Οι Hundred Year Storm έρχονται από το Τέξας και πέρσι κυκλοφόρησαν το Τhe Future Belongs To The Brave, τον τρίτο τους δίσκο, μετά από μια παύση τριών χρόνων από τις δύο πρώτες τους δουλειές. Οι συνθέσεις τους είναι κυρίως shoegaze/experimental με την προσθήκη φωνητικών samples από ομιλίες ιστορικών προσώπων. Ένα εκρηκτικό σύνολο για οπαδούς των 65dos, Maybeshewill, etc.

Οι Grain είναι μια τετράδα από την Αθήνα, ναι την δικιά μας Αθήνα. Καταπιάνονται με το ελληνόφωνο post punk/new wave. Έχουν προς το παρόν ένα demo, το οποίο μπορείτε να κατεβάσετε δωρεάν στο myspace τους. Την ώρα που γράφονται αυτές οι γραμμές οι Grain ετοιμάζουν τον πρώτο τους δίσκο.

Υπό άλλες συνθήκες το ομότιτλο Ep των Φιλανδών Florist θα το προσπερνούσα σχετικά εύκολα. Αλλά το δεκάλεπτο Bow Down And Repent που κλείνει το ep είναι τόσο χορταστικό που δεν θα μπορούσα να μην αναφερθώ σ' αυτό. Doomy Post-Rock, Gloomy Angst-Pop όπως γράφουν και οι ίδιοι στο myspace τους. Μ' αυτό το τραγούδι θα κλείσει η εκπομπή την επόμενη τετάρτη για να καταλάβετε γιατί μιλάω.

Μετά το Λονδίνο, το Βερολίνο, την Βιέννη, νέο απωθημένο πλέον είναι η Κοπεγχάγη. Οι τρεις πρώτοι σταθμοί ήταν αυτό ακριβώς που περίμενα, ίσως και κάτι παραπάνω. Φαντάζομαι ότι και η Δανία δεν θα με απογοητεύσει. Πολλά τα συγκροτήματα που ξεπήδησαν από αυτήν την χώρα τα τελευταία χρόνια, και όχι ονόματα της σειράς, αλλά πραγματικοί ογκόλιθοι (για τα δικά μου αυτιά τουλάχιστον). Σήμερα κοιτάω τους φακέλους που δεν πρόλαβα να τσεκάρω πέρσι και πέφτω πάνω στου Decorate Decorate. Μέχρι να έρθει η σειρά τους δυστυχώς διαλύθηκαν αλλά αυτό δεν στάθηκε εμπόδιο στην ακρόαση του Instructions, του πρώτου και δυστυχώς τελευταίου τους δίσκου. Αν τον είχα ακούσει στην ώρα του σίγουρα θα ήταν ανάμεσα στους αγαπημένους δίσκους του 2009. Μίξη Matt Berninger, Bowie και Paul Banks τα φωνητικά του Asbjørn Auring Grimm με συνοδεία fuzzy κιθάρες αλλά Sonic Youth/My Bloody Valentine. Εκρηκτικός δίσκος, με ξύπνησε για τα καλά σήμερα το πρωί.

The first 50k copies in the US will come on a special edition black disc. In the UK & Europe, there will be a standard jewel case version containing the 13 album tracks, as well as a deluxe version that comes in the same special packaging as the US release and contains the 13 album tracks plus two B-Sides.

A Vinyl edition will be released as well and will contain the track "Annabel Lee."

There has never been as pronounced of a leap in style and scope as with Red Sparowes' latest offering. The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer maintains their layered arrangements and swirling amplified crescendos, Americana noir soundscapes (punctuated by the extended pedal steel on “In Every Mind”), and gloriously triumphant melodies (“Giving Birth to Imagined Saviors”). Earlier records focused on the larger scope of the album, but the new album is song-centered, with the individual tracks harboring stronger independent identities. And where previous endeavors found the band propelled by enormous walls of sound, they now temper their monolithic progressions with distinct passages of separated and soft-spoken instrumentation. Red Sparowes were suspiciously absent from the playing field over the last three years, and now it’s apparent that they were busy drafting the grandest statement and finest achievement of their existence.

Thunderheads storming across the prairie, outraged students taking to the streets, migratory herds stampeding along the tundra--any number of images could describe the grandiose scope of Red Sparowes’ lush vignettes. Ποτέ δεν ήμουν μεγάλος φαν των Cold War Kids. Αυτό βέβαια δεν σημαίνει και τίποτα. Αρκετές φορές με ένα δύο τραγούδια κατάφερναν να μου τραβάνε το ενδιαφέρον. Έτσι και στο Behave Yourself που κυκλοφόρησε εχθές. Δεν είναι καμιά σπουδαία δουλειά αλλά έχει δύο τραγουδάκια που εμένα μου κόλλησαν. Το Audience και το Sermons είναι δύο συνθέσεις που σε κερδίζουν εύκολα. Φυσικά για άλλη μια φορά η φωνή του Nathan Willett και οι κοφτές κιθαριές είναι όλα τα λεφτά.

Οι ¡Forward, Russia! έχουν βγάλει δύο συμπαθητικά άλμπουμ μέχρι σήμερα που μιλάμε. Για λόγους που δεν ξέρουμε έχουν χαρακτηριστεί προς το παρόν τουλάχιστον ως ανενεργό συγκρότημα. Δεν μένουν άπραγα όμως και τα μέλη του συγκροτήματος. Ο κιθαρίστας τους, Whiskas στο όνομα, έχει δημιουργήσει ένα νέο Project, τους Honour Before Glory. Ουσιαστικά είναι μόνος του με την βοήθεια των μισών iLiKETRAiNS και μερικών άλλων φίλων του. Τα τρία δείγματα που μπορεί να ακούσει κανείς στο myspace του είναι άκρως ενθαρρυντικά. Ο Whiskas στα φωνητικά είναι φανταστικός και οι κιθάρες που τον συνοδεύουν δένουν μοναδικά. Εδώ μπορείς να κατεβάσεις το ένα από τα τρία και εδώ το δεύτερο. Η ακουστική εκτέλεση του Lions στο παρακάτω βίντεο είναι επίσης πανέμορφη.

............. αυτή ήταν η ατάκα του Scott Kelly χθες το βράδυ λίγο πριν ξεκινήσει το τελευταίο του τραγούδι στην ακουστική κιθάρα. Ένα βράδυ που φανταζόμουν πως θα ήταν καρμπόν της εμφάνισής τους πριν λίγα χρόνια στο An, αλλά έκανα λάθος. Την πρώτη διαφορά την είδαμε από την αρχή, ο Scott δεν καθόταν σε ένα μικρό σκαμπό αλλά επέλεξε να βγάλει το live όρθιος (λίγο αργότερα καταλάβαμε το γιατί). Πέρα από τα κλασικά Figures, The Ladder In My Blood, Catholic Blood ακούστηκαν και πράγματα που εγώ προσωπικά δεν περίμενα με τίποτα. Μόλις τον είδα να βγάζει την ηλεκτρική κιθάρα στην φόρα κατάλαβα ότι κάτι ''κακό'' πρόκειται να συμβεί. Ε ναι λοιπόν, μπορεί να μην αξιώθηκα να δω Neurosis αλλά η χθεσινή εκτέλεση του ''I Can See You'' δεν θα μπορούσε να είναι καλύτερη ακόμη και με την βοήθεια του Steve Von Till. Δαιμονισμένος θαρρείς ο Scott και η βραχνιασμένη μπάσα του φωνή βίασαν το τραγούδι με τον ομορφότερο τρόπο. Την αρχική εκτέλεση του τραγουδιού του John Lee Hooker δεν την γνωρίζω η αλήθεια είναι αλλά φαντάζομαι πως δεν πρέπει να έχει και μεγάλη σχέση με τον drone ογκόλιθο που ακούσαμε εχθές, έτριζε όλο το Mo Better. Όπως επίσης τα πάντα ταρακουνήθηκαν στο νέο τραγούδι από Shrinebuilder, κόλαση, με δυσκολία τα έβγαζε πέρα ο ενισχυτής. Συγκλονιστικές στιγμές, ειδικά όταν δεν τις περιμένεις κιόλας. Κλείσιμο την βραδιάς με νέο τραγούδι από Scott Kelly (''This is a song for my family''), στις κλασικές υπνωτικές τους φόρμες.

Υ.Γ Μεγάλο respect στον Scott, έφτασε στις δέκα το βράδυ από λονδίνο όπως μου είπε ο Theo, κομμάτια, και όμως έβγαλε ότι καλύτερο μπορούσε.

Penelope, Nico και Olivier είναι η τριάδα που αποτελεί τους Cercueil. Ένα συγκρότημα από την Γαλλία που βυθίζεται στην experimental pop. Με τα καταπληκτικά φωνητικά της Penelope και τις χαοτικές χορευτικές μελωδίες των άλλων δύο μας πασάρουν ένα άκρως ενδιαφέρον πακέτο. Το Shoo Straight Shout είναι ο δεύτερος δίσκος τους και κυκλοφόρησε το περασμένο καλοκαίρι. Σαράντα έξι ξέφρενα λεπτά στα οποία η electronica συνδυάζεται με τα έγχορδα ιδανικά.

Το θυμάστε το περσινό Bear Ep από τους συμπαθέστατους Motorama; Εγώ πάντως σίγουρα το θυμάμαι μιας και είχε κολλήσει για πολλές μέρες στο repeat. Οι φίλοι ρώσοι ετοιμάζουν το πρώτο τους ντεμπούτο, θα κυκλοφορήσει μέσα στην χρονιά. Πριν λίγες μέρες μας δώσανε και το πρώτο σινγκλ, με τίτλο Ghost, το οποίο κατεβάζεις δωρεάν στην σελίδα τους, εδώ δηλαδή. Το ίδιο σκοτεινό post punk συνεχίζεται και εδώ, και είναι τόσο *αμάτο.

Πολύ ενδιαφέρον μου φάνηκε το πρώτο Ep, με τίτλο You Can Can (για το οποίο υπάρχει σύνδεσμος για δωρεάν κατέβασμα στο myspace τους), των βρετανών Wonderfully Courteous Gentlemen. Μπίτια, ρυθμός, κιθάρες, δυναμικά τύμπανα, εκφραστικός τραγουδιστής. Πολύ πιασάρικο το αποτέλεσμα. Ίσως βέβαια να μιλάει ο ενθουσιασμός και πάλι, αλλά δεν βαριέσαι, έτσι έχουν τα πράγματα. Γράφουν τραγούδια για τον πρώτο τους δίσκο την στιγμή που αραδιάζω τις αερολογίες μου, θα τον περιμένω με ανυπομονησία.

Ο Nesey Gallons μας έρχεται από το Maine των ΗΠΑ και είναι μέλος των Circulatory System (συγκρότημα που βρήκα σε ορισμένες λίστες με τα καλύτερα της χρονιάς που πέρασε και εγώ δυστυχώς δεν άκουσα καν, αλλά θα ακούσω) και των The Music Tapes. Όταν δεν σπαταλάει τον χρόνο του με τα δύο παραπάνω συγκροτήματα το λοιπόν γράφει μόνος του κάτω από το όνομα του. Πέρσι κυκλοφόρησε τον πρώτο του επίσημο δίσκο με τίτλο Eyes & Eyes & Eyes Ago επιστρατεύοντας των Julian Koste (Neutral Milk Hotel, The Music Tapes) και την πολυοργανίστα Sarah Moran. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι ένα περίεργα όμορφο indie folk συνονθύλευμα. 14 τραγούδια με αρκετά underground χαρακτήρα και ωμή παραγωγή αλλά που ακούγονται τόσο οικεία όταν τα φορτώνεις στον player. Μου λείψανε τέτοιου είδους κυκλοφορίες. Jeff Mangum που είσαι;
